February 3, 2021 (Helena, MT)—The Library is pleased to announce the addition of Playaways to the Juvenile and Middle Grade audiobook collections. Thanks to a generous donation from the Lewis & Clark Library Foundation, the Library was able to purchase nearly 100 of the Playaway audiobook devices. The Library will add approximately 6 titles a month, making this a robust and growing collection.
“A Playaway is a pre-loaded audiobook that is extremely user friendly and accessible,” explains Lewis & Clark Library Children’s Librarian Molly Hudson. Hudson explains that “Listening is reading too!” 85% of what we learn we learn by listening. Hudson explains the choice to purchase Playaways, “most children don’t have access to CD players, and they are already comfortable using personal devices. Playaways fill the audiobook gap that has been lost as society is migrating away from discs.” Playaways give kids access to their favorite books on the audiobook player built just for them. No downloads or internet needed. Simply plug in headphones and press play.
In addition to helping kids connect with books in complementary ways, Playaways and audiobooks level the playing field by giving kids access to great stories anytime, anywhere. “We are very excited to offer this service as part of our Children’s collection,” stated Hudson.
Patrons will need a set of headphones or an auxiliary cable to listen to the Playaway, but other than that, the Playaway is ready to go upon checkout. Reserving a Playaway is easy. Simply visit the Library’s catalog J Audio and J MID Audio Collections. Select the Playaway you’re interested in and place a hold on the item. Once the item is ready for checkout, you will be notified via email or text message.
