Inclusive Story Time
October 17, 2018 (Helena, MT)—Children’s Services Librarian Marissa Bazan announced the addition of an Inclusive Story Time on October 26th from 9:30-10AM. “Inclusive Story Time is designed for children of all ages, but specifically geared towards children on the autism spectrum or with other special needs,” explained Bazan.
This early learning program will feature stories, songs, and movement games that are especially welcoming to children on the autism spectrum or with other special needs. “They’ll enjoy a safe, non-judgmental environment, a schedule board for following along, and a sensory-sensitive environment,” stated Bazan. The program begins before the library opens, no other library services will be available during that time.
Bazan explains the importance of using stories to connect children to a wide range of topics, “when kids read stories that reflect their experiences, it helps them create connections with literature and develop a positive self-esteem. In addition, children who hear stories about people who are different from them develop empathy and an understanding about themselves and others.” This program was generously funded by the Lewis & Clark Library Foundation.
