Youth Yoga at Your Lewis & Clark Library
(November 16, 2015) Your Lewis & Clark Library is pleased to offer new yoga programs for children and teens! Beginning in November, Teen Services will offer a monthly Teen Wellness Program focusing on healthy eating habits, yoga, and relaxation. Children’s Services will begin with a monthly Yoga Storytime for children and their families in November 2015. Beginning in January 2016, older elementary and middle school students will enjoy a Yoga Club once a month as an option on early release Mondays.
Yoga is new to libraries around the country. By providing opportunities for children and teens to learn about and practice yoga, kids can improve their self-esteem and self-awareness while learning and having fun with their peers. Yoga has been proven to reduce stress, improve concentration and relaxation, and promote healthy lifestyles. “We want to offer kids and teens in our community a new way to connect with their Library,” shared Heather Dickerson, Teen Services Librarian. “Our Teen Wellness Program fills a gap in some of the programming we’re already offering teens. They can come to a Saturday afternoon program, get a little exercise, relax, make a craft, and cultivate a habit of self-care.”
Movement is especially important for young children and their caregivers, and Yoga Storytimes offer another pathway to developing literacy skills. “It’s really fun for kiddos to jump around and act like animals during story time,” said Marrisa Bazaan, Children’s Librarian. “We want to encourage kids to be active and move. It opens your senses and helps you learn!”
The Teen Wellness Program will take place November 14 and December 19 from 1-2:30 pm in the Library’s Large Meeting Room. Yoga Storytimes begin November 18 and December 16 at 10:30 am in the Large Meeting Room.
